EV charging protocol expert Robert de Leeuw explains what’s new in OCPP 2.1

The EVerest community has wrapped up the development of OCPP 2.0.1 and is now starting the implementation of OCPP 2.1. The release of OCPP 2.1 is expected to be in Q1 2025.

One of the first actions was to get an overview of all the new functionalities included in OCPP 2.1. Robert de Leeuw, Technical EVangelist at PIONIX and LF Energy Ambassador, investigated the current public draft of OCPP 2.1 and compared it to OCPP 2.0.1. His main findings, briefly summarized:

  • Bidi Power Transfer (functional block Q)
  • DER support (functional block R)

Local Cost Calculation

  • Pre-paid card support

On top, there are some smaller additions and improvements
