PHYTEC and PIONIX introduce the EVCS-Cube, a development kit for AC/DC charging solutions. It combines PHYTEC’s phyVERSO-EVCS charger controller with PIONIX’s BaseCamp OS, based on the open-source firmware stack EVerest. The kit enables manufacturers of charging solutions to significantly accelerate product development times. The ready-to-use development kit comes with housing and all electronic components and is available immediately in the EVCS-Cube Basic version as an AC test kit at a price of 600 euros (plus VAT and shipping). The EVCS-Cube PoC including DC charging will follow in Q1/2025 and is expected to cost EUR 5,800 (plus VAT and shipping).
The EVCS-Cube was designed specifically for developers and manufacturers of charging solutions for electromobility, who can use the charging controller and operating system package to start testing and developing their products straight away. EVCS-Cube Basic includes all components such as power meters, contactors, residual current detection, charging indicators and a stop button. The EVCS-Cube PoC additionally enables DC charging and includes further components such as DC power supply unit, insulation monitoring and power meter. Both versions of the EVCS-Cube can be optionally expanded with WiFi, LTE, display, NFC, fan, temperature sensor and other modules.
Part of the EVCS-Cube is an evaluation license for PIONIX BaseCamp, a powerful and future-proof operating system especially for charging solutions. PIONIX BaseCamp simplifies the development of charging stations and ensures compatibility with the latest industry standards. It is based on the open source framework EVerest, which was initiated by PIONIX and is now part of the Linux Foundation Energy. The PHYTEC and PIONIX teams each provide comprehensive support for hardware and software.
With the development of the EVCS-Cube, PHYTEC and PIONIX are addressing one of the most pressing challenges currently facing the electromobility industry: interoperability between the various components and modules of the charging infrastructure. The package of tried-and-tested charging electronics and future-oriented operating system supports common industry standards (IEC61851, ISO 15118-2 (AC+DC) DIN SPEC 70121 (DC) for CCS and TYPE 2 charging solutions, OCPP 1.6 and OCPP 2.0.1), application scenarios such as Plug&Charge and the communication protocols relevant for communication with the infrastructure, vehicle and payment system. The functions required for load management and remote access are already integrated and prepared.
The phyVERSO-EVCS dual-port charge controller is equipped with a powerful ARM quad-core processor module and is suitable for volume deployment in projects for AC and/or DC charging processes including HPC. PHYTEC supports the design-in and offers volume production, including comprehensive services throughout the entire life cycle. Individual adaptations and additional functionalities are also possible, due to the modular design of the electronics and PHYTEC's SBC+ modification concept. This takes only around 10 weeks from order to prototype and at manageable development costs.
In addition to the phyVERSO-EVCS charger controller, PHYTEC develops and produces System on Modules and Single Board Computers, and offers development services for fully customized charging electronics. Modules with pin-compatible footprints, such as those with NXP i.MX 6UL/ULL, STM32MP13x, and NXP i.MX 91/93 processors, enable scalable product variants and upgrades without the need to redesign the baseboard.
